Artistic Philosophy
I believe that Art must be...
Meaningful
Purposeful
and Engaging
To ask why...
To see beyond the literal...
To get to the essence, the emotion...
To create a voice all its own...
And to set that voice free to interpretation.
In an advising meeting, while expressing my frustrations in my career path, Ursula Belden
said to me, "If you are unsatisfied with the kinds of theatre being produced, invent your own form." And
that's exactly what I do.
While in London in 2004 I saw a production of Singer at the Tricycle Theatre.
It renewed my faith that art can change minds. Here was a small production, not flashy by any means, but it told a story that
was more relevant to London at that time, more than the 40 other plays I saw on that trip. I found myself weeping
in the fourth row before intermission, drawn to the parallels of the hatred that concentration camp victims faced
after WWII in London and the tension that the asylum-seekers face today. I am unaware if others in the audience
were as touched as I. But, what I do know is that the tears I shed that day, the questions asked, are why I do what
I do, because as an artist, it is not for me to tell you what to think, but to help you to feel...and to see.
